The dwarven mine near Saltmarsh is a relatively new development, established about three years prior to the events of Ghosts of Saltmarsh. It is located outside of the main town area, approximately a day and a half's journey overland, or 16 hours by ship. This distance means a small, makeshift settlement has sprung up around the mine itself, complete with guard towers, bunk houses for the miners, a warehouse, and a small tavern called the Miner's Respite. The entire operation is a joint venture, with soldiers from the Keolandish royal army stationed alongside dwarven fighters from the Copperlocks clan for security.
The operation began after the crown purchased an old manor in Saltmarsh to use as their headquarters. This building in town acts as the logistical hub for coordinating shipments of raw ore and processed goods, as well as handling administrative tasks like payroll and trade agreements. The current leader of the operation is Manistrad Copperlocks, a dwarven council member in Saltmarsh who runs the entire enterprise from this headquarters, aligning herself with the town's Loyalist faction due to her contract with the Kingdom of Keoland.
The primary output of the mine is silver, with growing quantities being extracted. The dwarves are convinced that the nearby cliffs hold deposits of gold as well, which, if found, would quickly transform Saltmarsh into a sprawling boomtown. The economic implications of this new industry have caused tension with the town's traditional fishing community, who fear the increased competition and changing dynamics of their quiet town. The mining operation is not without its dangers, as the deeper levels of the mine hold older, more perilous secrets. Recent expansions have reportedly broken into ancient workings, leading to disappearances and encounters with creatures like firenewts, a roper, or even slaver groups. Some of the old lower levels are unlit and actively host monsters, making any exploration below the currently safe sections a significant risk.
The strategic importance of the mine has not gone unnoticed by external factions. The Scarlet Brotherhood, a secret society seeking to sow chaos, is reportedly interested in disrupting the valuable operation. This means that the mine, while a source of prosperity for the town, is also a potential flashpoint for conflict, requiring constant vigilance from its mixed contingent of Keolandish soldiers and dwarven guards.
The influx of around two hundred dwarves has made them the largest non-human faction in the predominantly human town, leading to some social friction. Dwarves from the mine often frequent the Wicker Goat tavern, a Loyalist establishment, which serves as one of the few places where the different communities mix. This new dwarven presence is a significant cultural shift for the isolated fishing village, adding another layer to the complex social and political landscape of Saltmarsh.
