Perched atop a low, defensible hill overlooking the streets of Portown, the town barracks serve as both the headquarters of the town guard and its primary jail. Constructed from thick blocks of gray stone with heavy oak doors reinforced by iron bands, the building projects an unmistakable sense of authority. Unlike most structures in Portown, the barracks include a substantial underground level carved into the hillside, making it one of the few buildings in town with a true cellar.

The facility is commanded by Kraddok Stonehorn, a lawful and disciplined veteran who serves as jailer. A longtime friend and trusted confidant of Councilman Eliander Fireborn, Kraddok is renowned for his unwavering adherence to the law, earning the complete confidence of both the town guard and the ruling council. The underground jail is divided into two distinct sections designed to house different kinds of offenders. The first is a large communal holding chamber where drunken sailors, unruly fishermen, brawlers, and other minor offenders are confined until they sober up or complete their short sentences.

A thick oak door fitted with an exceptionally sturdy lock seals the chamber, while a small barred viewing hatch allows guards to monitor those inside without exposing themselves to the rowdy prisoners. Though far from comfortable, the chamber is clean, well-maintained, and secure enough to discourage even the most determined escape attempts. A narrow stone passage extends deeper beneath the barracks, leading to six individual prison cells reserved for dangerous criminals and prisoners requiring isolation. Each cell is secured by heavy iron-bound doors and exceptionally strong locks, ensuring that only authorized guards may gain entry. One of these cells is unique, having been enchanted many years ago with powerful wards that suppress teleportation and prevent divination magic from functioning within its walls. Spellcasters arrested in Portown are confined here under strict precautions, bound in heavy manacles and blindfolded to limit the use of magical components. On rare occasions, Eliander himself uses this magically protected chamber as a private meeting room whenever discussions involve matters of exceptional secrecy.

The Portown jail is intended for those serving sentences of up to one year, making it suitable for local crimes and temporary confinement while investigations are completed. Prisoners sentenced to lengthy imprisonment or hard labor are transferred under armed escort to the fortified prison at Seaton, whose larger facilities are better equipped to house long-term inmates. At any given time, a contingent of guards remains on constant watch over the barracks, typically led by an experienced veteran officer. Their disciplined patrols, combined with the building's stout construction and formidable security measures, have made the Portown Barracks one of the most secure and respected institutions within the town.
