The Golden Brotherhood—mockingly called the Goldenboys by their rivals—is Portown’s wealthiest and most refined thieves’ guild, controlling Market Square and much of the eastern quarter. Its members dress like prosperous merchants, minor nobles, and respectable tradesmen, favoring tailored coats, polished boots, and discreet pieces of gold jewelry. Rather than snatching purses in filthy alleys, they specialize in elaborate confidence schemes, rigged gambling, blackmail, burglary, forgery, and the sale of stolen treasures brought into town by unsuspecting adventurers. Several shopkeepers and moneylenders quietly cooperate with the Brotherhood, while those who refuse often suffer mysterious robberies or sudden financial ruin. The Goldenboys maintain that they are businessmen rather than common criminals, and their carefully cultivated friendships among Portown’s officials may explain why the militia rarely interferes with their affairs.
