The Homestead Mercantile occupies a broad timber-framed building along one of Westbridge’s narrow lanes, a short walk from the bridge. A covered porch keeps sacks of grain and stacked firewood out of the rain, while muddy boots have worn the threshold smooth.
Inside, shelves and barrels leave just enough room for two customers to pass. The air smells of lamp oil, dried apples, rope, and the faint sweetness of soap. Mara Wescott runs the shop with a sharp memory for what each household needs.
She stocks flour, salt, candles, nails, twine, blankets, fishing line, and the other ordinary things that can become urgent when the roads turn bad. Farmers bring her eggs, preserves, and surplus produce to trade. She keeps a few travelers’ supplies behind the counter, though anything unusual must be ordered from Portown or Saltmarsh.Mara knows that a village of three hundred cannot thrive on coin alone. She allows trusted neighbors to buy on account until harvest or payday, recording each debt in a ledger she keeps beneath the counter. She is patient with a family facing a hard season, but expects people to speak plainly with her. Customers who try to deceive her find that Westbridge has very few other places to buy lamp oil.
The mercantile is also where small pieces of news gather. A ferryman mentions a damaged landing downstream; a carter reports armed strangers on the road; someone comes in for candles and leaves knowing which neighbor needs help. Mara passes along what matters, usually while wrapping a purchase in scrap paper. Travelers seeking supplies will find them here, along with a fair account of what the road ahead has been like lately.
