Hearthstone Bakery opens before the rest of Westbridge has shaken off the river mist. Its ovens occupy the back of a low timber-framed building, and their warmth reaches the street whenever the door swings open. The smell of fresh bread mingles with woodsmoke and damp earth as farmers pass on their way to the fields.
By midmorning, loaves cool on racks behind the counter while flour dust settles over the worn floorboards. The bakery makes the bread most villagers eat: round brown loaves, coarse barley bread, and sturdy rolls that keep well in a traveler’s pack.
When the orchards bear fruit, the bakers fill small pies with apples or pears; at harvest time, they make larger ones for families coming in from the fields. Flour and firewood arrive from nearby farms, though a stretch of heavy rain can leave both in short supply. On such mornings, the loaves are smaller and the line at the counter grows longer.Hearthstone belongs to Edric and Nella Thorne, a married couple who have worked its ovens for more than twenty years. Edric tends the fire and kneads the heavier dough, while Nella manages the counter and decides what can be made from the ingredients at hand. She remembers which households buy bread each morning and which come only when their own ovens have gone cold. Neither has much time for idle talk during the first baking, but they make room at the counter for anyone with news of the roads.
When Westbridge’s warning bell rings, the Thornes bank the oven fire and carry whatever bread is ready to the villagers sheltering near the bridge. At other times, the bakery is simply a place to warm cold hands and exchange a few words while a purchase is wrapped. Children linger for broken crusts, travelers buy a loaf for the road, and neighbors leave with bread still warm enough to feel through the cloth.
